    Abstract
This thesis reviews the literature on responses to touch by animals, non-human primates and humans. The physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of these life forms is explored in response to touch deprivation and positive touch. Theories of attachment and symbiosis in relation to touch are discussed. Neurobiological factors in development generally, and in response to touch specifically, are examined. The responses to touch by couples in intimate relationships are examined and some implications and interventions for counselling couples are suggested.
